Juneteenth: The Announcement of Freedom in Texas (June 19, 1865)

Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people in the state were free. Because Texas was geographically distant from major Union military control, slavery continued there until federal troops arrived and enforced emancipation. This day became an important celebration of freedom and the end of slavery in Texas. | Source: https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/june-19/abolition-of-slavery-announced-in-texas-juneteenth
