This illustration depicts the historic Walker County Courthouse in Huntsville, Texas, as it appeared in the late nineteenth century. Designed in a prominent Victorian style with a central clock tower and symmetrical wings, the building stood as a symbol of civic authority and local pride. In April 1878, the courthouse square surrounding this structure became the site of the lynching of Walter Dering. While the courtroom inside represented due process and legal order, the violence carried out just beyond its doors revealed the limits of justice during the post Reconstruction era in East Texas. | Creator: Walker County Texas | Date: 1884 | Source: Walker County Historical Commission Archives, Huntsville, TexasDownload Original File
