Enslaved People Living Quarters

This image depicts slave quarters and the state of living spaces enslaved people in Huntsville occupied on farms and plantations. Though much of the enslaved people population worked in town, there were still quite of bit who lived on agricultural properties in the surrounding land. These simple structures were home to many families and communities who were field laborers or hired by residents of Huntsville. This image, while showing the harshness of slavery, also shows the domesticity of enslaved people, with family life, religion, and cultural traditions. For the workforce that powered the economy of Huntsville before 1860, these communities were significant .
