Merely 50 years earlier this sight would have been virtually unthinkable. Black men were shut out of nearly every available job in the oil industry. But by 1955 Jake Simmons had built a fortune for himself in the oilfields of Oklahoma and East Texas. His work would eventually stretch internationally both on his own behalf and on the behalf of the United States Commerce Department.
