Life on Guadalupe Bay as depicted by artist Frank Weir

The Akokisa, a clan part of the Atakapa Tribes, is said to have been one of, if not the first, inhabitants of northwest Houston. They lived in cone-shaped houses made of grass, mud, and palmetto leaves. They typically had a central hearth and a smoke hole for ventilation. During the summer, the homes would also have open sides, allowing the breeze to be carried through the homes. Due to having to migrate towards the coast, their diet consisted of shellfish such as Oysters and Clams but also the surrounding vegetation like wild berries, persimmons, and acorns. They were also known to eat seabird eggs. | Source: “Guadalupe Bay,” n.d. https://www.texasbeyondhistory.net/guadbay/images/Weir-Guadalupe-Bay.html.
