Chief Branson Cooper Sylestine, whose Indian name was Tic-ca-Itche was the chief of the Alabama - Coushattas from 1936 - 1939. He was born on the tribe’s reservation in Polk County, Texas on March 7, 1879. His grandfather was Colabe Cillistine, a subchief of the Alabama - Coushatta tribe during the first half of the nineteenth century. Sylestine went to a brush-arbor school on the reservation through fifth grade, and then worked as a foreman on the roads in the reservation. He also worked in the timber industry and did some farming as well. On July 1, 1905, he married Mozanne Thompson, and the couple had six children. Sylestine had a passion for education, making sure at every opportunity to stress the importance of education, especially in English and mathematics. Sylestine was a highly respected member of his community. He unfortunately passed away on February 23, 1969, and was buried in the cemetery on the Alabama - Coushatta Reservation.
