A staged photograph of George Batise and his family in 1915 on the Alabama - Coushatta reservation in East Texas. In the image, women are seen pounding corn, for Sofki, or corn in soup in the traditional method, which involves river cane baskets, trays, and sifters. The photo also depicts the people also wearing Euro - American clothes. This shows how the Alabama - Coushatta adapted to American culture, however, still keeping traditional customs alive, even though there had been repeated efforts from the Texas Government to kick them out from their homes through efforts such as the Dawes Act and the Indian Removal Act. | Source: https://escholarship.org/uc/item/5jn3p61b#article_main Download Original File
