Chief Charles Martin Thompson

Chief Charles Martin Thompson, whose Indian name was Sun-Kee was the chief of the Alabama - Coushattas from 1928 - 1935. Thompson was born on the reservation in Polk County, Texas, in 1860. He was involved and became a leader in church activities and school development, as well as having a special attention on Alabama - Coushatta heritage. Thompson went to school on the reservation and learned to use English very well in reading, writing, and speaking. He was able to use that knowledge to gain 40,000 dollars for the expansion and improvement of the Alabama - Coushatta reservation. In 1904, he married Josie Sylestine and the couple had two daughters and a son together. He continued serving his community, as well as serving as chief until his death on September 8th, 1935.
