Indeed, white newspapers throughout the nation often ran sensational stories of supposed African American crimes, helping to cement the broader American conspiracy to stereotype and criminalize Blackness. Overall, no less than 71 newspaper articles reported some aspects of either the Looney murder, Adams’s arrest, or Adams’s hanging during the span of September 25 to October 8, 1887.
