The lynching of Dee Watkins was just the beginning of a long pattern of violence committed by whitecappers against African Americans in Nacogdoches County. This article appears in a Kansas newspaper reporting the incident and underscoring the national attention whitecapping received at the time. White Nacogdocheans would strike again in 1929 as they also forcefully removed the African American community out of downtown Nacogdoches to take over several business buildings.
