When the first students of Emmett J. Scott High School walked through its doors in 1949, they walked into a school that offered opportunities that had been denied them at the small rural all-black schools in Smith County. Scott High had 26 classrooms and had facilities that rural schools lacked such as science labs, an auditorium, a library, and a band hall. The school was a source of pride to the community because it offered courses that were unavailable at rural schools. Course offerings included Spanish, chemistry, algebra I and II, geometry, and biology. | Source: Smith County Historical Society. | Rights: Used with permission from the Smith County Historical Society.
