Pictured are three rural all-black schools from Smith County: Black Fork, New Hope, and Mt. Carmel schools. The first schools for blacks opened in Smith County in 1867. Since the state did not fully fund black schools, many of the schools were funded through a mix of state funds and private donations raised through fundraisers held at local black churches. Public schools for white students typically received enough state funds to not have to fundraise to make ends meet. | Source: Smith County Historical Society. | Rights: Used with permission from the Smith County Historical Society.
