Barbara Jordan speaks at the National Women's Conference in Houston.

Barbara Jordan is the first Black woman elected to a state senate seat in Texas after Reconstruction. Jordan was a prominent Civil Rights activist during the 1960s and 70s and one of the first Black women to win a seat in the House of Representatives. At the National Women's Conference, Jordan spoke out about inequality, Black rights, and the importance of progressive politics. During her keynote speech, Jordan demanded that women gain access to political, social, and economic equity, the same as men. She also directed conference-goers attention to the need for peace between nations and espoused values that supported human rights across the globe. Rather than focusing specifically on American women, Jordan's feminism was expansive and considered women from all parts of the world. | Source: https://digital.library.sc.edu/exhibits/iwy/
