The photograph shows only one part of the arduous wash process. After the initial scrub and wringing, the clothes were typically placed in a big vat of boiling water and agitated by hand with a wooden paddle. Then, they were transferred to a rinse tub and finally to a bluing tub (for white clothes) before being wrung out and hung on the line. All of this required frequent trips to the well, pump or stream to haul clean water. | Source: Rural Electrification Administration and Franklin D.
