For three graves were placed here that year. Pleasant Gray, Huntsville's founder, deeded in 1847 a 1,600-square foot plot at this site. The original tract has been greatly enlarged by other donations from local citizens. Numerous graves bear the death date 1867, when a yellow-fever epidemic swept the county. Among the many famous persons buried here are General Sam Houston; Henderson King Yoakum, author of the first comprehensive history of Texas; state congressmen; and pioneer families.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":[],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://easttexashistory.org/files/fullsize/08cb4829b9d8236dc8bc2ced21d3e6b5.jpg":{"id":1756,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"The official Oakwood Cemetery historical marker.","description":"texasescapes.com","thumbnail":"https://easttexashistory.org/files/square_thumbnails/08cb4829b9d8236dc8bc2ced21d3e6b5.jpg"},"https://easttexashistory.org/files/fullsize/9df3d3201034461aaea4c1dd55be748d.jpg":{"id":1757,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Sam Houston Memorial Grave in foreground and James Gillespie Monument at Oakwood Cemetery.","description":"texasescapes.com","thumbnail":"https://easttexashistory.org/files/square_thumbnails/9df3d3201034461aaea4c1dd55be748d.jpg"},"https://easttexashistory.org/files/fullsize/c1de0eb717ae907492ec08c81b476953.jpg":{"id":1758,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Photograph of the original Sam Houston grave in 1864.","description":"Walker County Treasurers","thumbnail":"https://easttexashistory.org/files/square_thumbnails/c1de0eb717ae907492ec08c81b476953.jpg"},"https://easttexashistory.org/files/fullsize/5568db67613c0ce9f2207e21b1feaa7d.jpg":{"id":1759,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"1958 image of Sam Houston's memorial grave and monument covered in snow.","description":"Walker County Treasurers","thumbnail":"https://easttexashistory.org/files/square_thumbnails/5568db67613c0ce9f2207e21b1feaa7d.jpg"},"https://easttexashistory.org/files/fullsize/ffe30dcbda1d8269354a87e8f02666a8.jpg":{"id":1760,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Sam Houston's grave photographed on December 18, 1963.","description":"Walker County Treasurers","thumbnail":"https://easttexashistory.org/files/square_thumbnails/ffe30dcbda1d8269354a87e8f02666a8.jpg"},"https://easttexashistory.org/files/fullsize/8f8b7a514baff530006abe1302637f3b.jpg":{"id":1761,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"The James Gillespie Monument at Oakwood Cemetery.","description":"texasescapes.com","thumbnail":"https://easttexashistory.org/files/square_thumbnails/8f8b7a514baff530006abe1302637f3b.jpg"},"https://easttexashistory.org/files/fullsize/12a28e6671a3983c03c81a1effb276a7.jpg":{"id":1762,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"The Col.
