After enlisting in the Army of the Republic of Texas, John and his brother William fought in the Battle of San Jacinto, where William was badly wounded.  As a reward for his service, John received a land grant from the new Texan government.  Settling near present-day New Waverly, Texas, John and his family were successful millers, ranchers, and farmers.  After the death of his first wife, Margaret, John married Henrietta R. Ramsdell.
