W. J. Johnson gave land for the railroad right-of-way with the stipulation that a station be built at the new settlement. The town was platted along the tracks, with streets named for early pioneers. Dodge soon had a school, two churches, a Masonic lodge, a bank, a cotton gin, and several stores. After 1900 a rail line from an Oakhurst sawmill was built to transport lumber to the main line at Dodge for shipment.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":[],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://easttexashistory.org/files/fullsize/ac359bf29f72110514c69649a8ae516a.jpg":{"id":1707,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Texas historical marker for Dodge, Texas.","description":"","thumbnail":"https://easttexashistory.org/files/square_thumbnails/ac359bf29f72110514c69649a8ae516a.jpg"},"https://easttexashistory.org/files/fullsize/da2a0b65dfac63abed7d2537efc3461d.jpg":{"id":1708,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Grammar school in Dodge, Texas courtesy of the Walker County Treasurers.","description":"","thumbnail":"https://easttexashistory.org/files/square_thumbnails/da2a0b65dfac63abed7d2537efc3461d.jpg"},"https://easttexashistory.org/files/fullsize/e14456ce213471f68b55462137a25e8d.jpg":{"id":1709,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Photograph is of an African-American school house in Dodge, Texas in 1950 courtesy of the Walker County Treasurers.","description":"","thumbnail":"https://easttexashistory.org/files/square_thumbnails/e14456ce213471f68b55462137a25e8d.jpg"},"https://easttexashistory.org/files/fullsize/9a6770254fbe444310561d4858a24452.jpg":{"id":1710,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Homecoming picnic celebration in Dodge, Texas in 1956 courtesy of the Walker County Treasurers.","description":"","thumbnail":"https://easttexashistory.org/files/square_thumbnails/9a6770254fbe444310561d4858a24452.jpg"},"https://easttexashistory.org/files/fullsize/707469edb6c25e33421e929fce8c3ad7.jpg":{"id":1711,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Train station in Dodge, Texas in 1956 courtesy of the Walker County Treasurers.","description":"","thumbnail":"https://easttexashistory.org/files/square_thumbnails/707469edb6c25e33421e929fce8c3ad7.jpg"}}}
