Jones and the Modern Skyline

Mrs. Jones related that her husband sometimes lovingly patted the buildings he owned as he strolled through downtown Houston, but his figurative fingerprints can also be observed at buildings he never laid eyes on. An obvious example is the Jesse H. Jones Hall for the Performing Arts (kitty-corner from the Chronicle Building at the Texas and Milam intersection). Another is the 75-story, 1,002-foot skyscraper just across the street from the Chronicle Building's front entrance (but with an official address of 600 Travis). As of early 2015, this was the tallest building in Houston, the tallest building in Texas, and the tallest five-sided building in the world. Also, the offices of Houston Endowment could be found on its 64th floor. The building was completed in 1981 (on the former site of a previous Jones building) to serve as HQ for Texas Commerce Bank, which had been created by the 1964 merger of Texas National Bank with the National Bank of Commerce -- which Jones founded in 1912 and presided over until his death, when ownership devolved to Houston Endowment. Prior to 1981, HQ for Texas Commerce Bank (and its predecessor National Bank of Commerce) was at Jones' Gulf Building, 712 Main, also on this tour. | Source: Google Maps (Street View)
