This image shows the Goree Girl All String Band playing at the Texas Prison Rodeo in the 1940s. The Goree Girl All String Band, was a band of all female inmates, housed in the Goree Unit, in Huntsville Texas. [1] The group was widely known and were heard weekly on the WBAP radio station, airing across North Texas. [1] The was started by inmate Reable Childs, and she was inspired by the station’s show, “Thirty minutes Behind the Walls,” which gave the audience a peek into the prison system in Texas. [1] The eight women band had singers, acoustic guitars, fiddle, banjo, and a steel guitar. [1] The band played country and western and they were the first all women country band in Texas. [1] However, after they were released from prison, they did not further their musical careers.
