Portrait of John Henry "Jack" Yates

Jack Yates was the born a slave in Gloucester County, Virginia. Upon emancipation he traveled to Houston and became a minster, establishing a permanent location from the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Yates founded educational programs for former slaves. He also helped create Emancipation Park and The College Memorial Park Cemetery. As a visionary, his efforts would help create Bishop College, the first African American College in Texas. In 1891 Yates left Antioch Church and founded the Bethel Baptist Church.
