This 1917 photograph shows the sixty-four Black soldiers tried in the largest military tribunal in U.S. Army history. No civilian amongst the prosecution witnesses could identify a soldier who shot and killed someone, and every man on trial was represented by a single lawyer. Ultimately, thirteen men were sentenced to death by hanging, with no opportunity for appeal or constitutionally guaranteed due process. | Source: Crow, Matthew.
