The Davis Guards were first and foremost an artillery company. They proved themselves to be one of the elite units of the Civil War. On September 8, 1863, the Davis Guards at Sabine Pass were armed with two thirty-two pound cannons, two twenty-four pound cannons, and two thirty-two pound Howitzers (a cannon with a shorter barrel that fired its load at higher elevations with a smaller powder charge). A cannon crew typically consisted of eight men, four to clean and load the cannon, one to fire the cannon, two to carry ammunition and cut fuses, and one man in charge. | Source: http://www.old-picture.com/civil-war/ArtilleryDownload Original File
