Second Battle of Galveston

Shortly after his arrival in Texas, Magruder launched an attack on the Union blockade of the port of Galveston on January 1, 1863. His men were successful in driving away the Union gun boats and capturing 400 prisoners. Magruder was celebrated throughout the state and the south for the victory as it had re-opened a key port for the Confederacy. However, the victory was short-lived as, less than a week later, the Union blockade was again in place. The city of Galveston did remain in Confederate hands until the end of the war. | Source: Harper's Weekly, January 31, 1863
