The Hogg Family, circa 1890

Ima Hogg was the only daughter of Governor James Stephen "Jim" Hogg and Sarah Ann "Sallie" Hogg. Despite Texas legend, Ima Hogg did not have a sister named "Ura." Her brothers were named William Clifford, Michael Stephen, and Thomas Elisha. According to Ima, Jim Hogg named her to honor his oldest brother, Civil War veteran and poet, Thomas Hogg. The name was taken from a character in Thomas Hogg's Civil War poem "The Fate of Marvin." When Sallie Hogg's father, Colonel Stinson, heard about the name, he rode fifteen miles into town to try to persuade Jim to reconsider, but arrived too late - - Ima Hogg had already been christened. | Date: circa 1890 | Source: Hogg (James Stephen) Papers
