Ruben "Jelly" Samuel

Diboll Dragon Ruben "Jelly" Samuel posed with his son for this 1941 photo. Samuel first encountered the Diboll Dragons when the team arrived in Shreveport and soundly beat the team he was playing for. Hiding in a freight car, he rode the train to Lufkin and then walked the rest of the way to Diboll where he joined the Dragons and was hired as a planer for the Southern Pine Lumber Company. Samuel played in Diboll from 1940 until 1950 with a two year gap from 1944 to 1946 when he served in the army. He died in 2015 at 96. | Source: The History Center at Diboll
